The aircraft was deployed to fight fires that erupted in several areas of the Ukrainian capital, as shown in footage released by Radio Liberty and Ukraine’s public broadcaster Suspilne.
In the images, the helicopter can be seen releasing water using an external bucket — a special tank suspended under the fuselage, designed to carry water or other fire-extinguishing agents.

Later, the Main Directorate of Intelligence of Ukraine’s Ministry of Defense confirmed that two Ka-32 helicopters from its fleet were involved in response operations to what it described as a “terrorist attack” by the Russian Federation on Kyiv.

In September 2023, Portugal’s Ministry of Defense announced the delivery of the first Ka-32 helicopters promised to Ukraine as part of an aid package. The aircraft were transported disassembled by truck. The transfer is part of a plan announced in 2022 to provide Ukraine with six multifunctional helicopters, originally acquired by Portugal in 2006 for firefighting missions.

Developed in the former Soviet Union based on the military Ka-27 platform, the Ka-32 is a versatile helicopter designed for cargo transport, rescue missions, firefighting, and heavy construction operations.
